Hiring Development Office Staff Successful development offices raise money by building great relationships with their donors.  That means development staff need to have excellent skills with: People - the ability to get on with people aged 18-100, male and female, from all walks of life. Persuasion - do not underestimate the skill required to successfully secure that big donation! Communication - the ability to write compelling cases for support and motivate people to give. IT - there’s no point investing in a good database if your staff don’t know how to use it. Initiative - development offices need to make things happen and generate their own workload - often from a standing start. If there are several staff in the development office, they should at least have all these skills between them, if not in one individual.  Remember: development staff will get out and meet your community - they are the face of your organisation to your alumni - so make sure they’re good ambassadors. What backgrounds do development professionals come from? Although it can be a good idea to hire people who have already got a track record in fundraising, don’t limit your potential candidate pool.  Many of the skills required of good development staff can be found in personnel working in other professions such as marketing, communications, consultancy, banking, law, retail, IT and so on. They may never have realised the career possibilities in development before you mention them. How do I recruit development staff? You may wish to use different recruitment methods for different roles (see list of typical development roles).  For positions under a development director, you can simply post an ad on this website or on any of the job sites listed on our Jobs page and in local media outlets.  For a Development Director, it may also be worth thinking about what talented individuals you have amongst your alumni or parental body.  Alternatively, there are a number of executive search firms (i.e. Head Hunters) who specialise in this sector.  You can find a list of these on our Jobs page. © Orier Digital Limited 2012 FIND DEVELOPMENT JOBS!   Whether you’re looking to start a career in development or are already an experienced practitioner, you can find vacancies today!
